Installation

QuikGIF requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later.

Mac App Store

The easiest way to get the menubar app. Download it directly from the App Store:

Download on the Mac App Store

Homebrew (CLI)

Install the quikgif command-line tool via Homebrew:

brew install ringo380/tap/quikgif

To update later:

brew upgrade quikgif
tip

You can also install the CLI from within the app. Open Settings > About and click Install CLI Tool.

Permissions

Screen Recording (required)

QuikGIF needs Screen Recording permission to capture windows and screen regions. On first launch, the app triggers the macOS system dialog automatically. You can also grant it manually:

System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording > QuikGIF

After toggling the permission on, macOS will prompt you to quit and reopen the app.

warning

The CLI also requires Screen Recording permission. If quikgif record fails with a permission error, grant access to your terminal app (Terminal, iTerm2, etc.) in System Settings.

Accessibility (optional)

Accessibility permission enables event capture for post-processing features like cursor smoothing, click indicators, type smoothing, and keystroke badges. Without it, these features gracefully degrade -- recordings still work, but visual overlays based on input events are skipped.

System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility

Grant access to your terminal app if using the CLI, or to QuikGIF if using the menubar app.
